According to a study in Southern California, obesity in children is majorly associated with hypertension. It also shows that children who are overweight, will have hypertension twice than those with normal weight; moderately obese children have four times greater risk while extremely obese children have ten times more risk of hypertension. it was found that 10% of children who come into the category of extremely obese, are hypertensive and half of them have experienced hypertension. In earlier studies, 1%-5% of children had hypertension.
The studies conducted must be dealt accordingly with the paediatricians. They must be vigilant in screening obese and overweight children and to determine if they are hypertensive because this may not show symptoms for several years.
While the study was being conducted in Southern California, by Kaiser Permanente, they examined 250,000 health records of children between 6-17 years old from January 2007 to December 2009. They used the first four blood pressures obtained in children as part of their clinical care for 36 months.
They concluded that hypertension is a serious health condition for children that could lead to kidney and heart diseases. Generally, pediatricians must check the blood pressure of children every time they come for a visit but should not be limited to this intervention. They must screen obese and overweight children because they have a higher risk of having hypertension.
The results also suggest that the classification used to identify overweight and obese children is an effective tool to identify whether they have a high risk of hypertension. The researchers used the BMI which is specific for sex and age of patients, which was developed by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in coordination with the World Health Organization. When the children are above the overweight indicator, it means that they are in the prehypertension stage. For those above the indicator for obesity, it indicates that they are on the hypertension stage. For example, a boy aged 10 who has a body mass index of 23 is categorized as obese. Given that the same boy drops his body mass index to 21, he is considered overweight but if he has a body mass index of 18, it is considered a healthy weight and if it drops to 13, he is underweight.
The study highlights that the existing quality data to address important scientific questions are of great use. It also suggests that health providers must focus on the limited resources on children who need a timely check-up.
On the other hand, children who grow up overweight have a greater risk of gastric cancer too. The researchers collected the body mass index of boys with an average age of 17 starting from 1967-2005. After forty years, they crosschecked the data to see the progress of the study. The team was surprised to find out that cancer was prevalent in men who were overweight when they were at their adolescent stage.

Let your child know that you are always there to support him. Remember, your child’s feelings will depend on how his parents feel and support about what is going on with his life. If you accept the fact that he is overweight or obese, he will feel good about himself.
Talk with the child about his condition and allow him to share his concerns if there are any. This way, you are aware of his fears about his weight condition.
