Honey is a delicious food, which can be used in place of sugar to sweeten desserts and beverages, or in savory preparations like salad dressings, sauces and marinades. Consuming it has also been shown to benefit you in other ways, for example relieving a sore throat by coating it and making swallowing easier. Because of its versatility in the kitchen, it is always good to know where to buy raw honey, and to keep a jar or two on hand. What you may not know, however, is that honey also has benefits when used topically rather than eaten or consumed in beverages. Here are just three of the ways you can use the raw honey in your kitchen as a natural, affordable and effective beauty product:
Make Hair Shinier and Less Frizzy With Honey
This is a very easy way to use raw honey as a beauty treatment, because you don’t need any other ingredients or to prepare anything in advance – just take some honey into the shower with you and you’re ready to go! All you need to do is apply some honey to the dry ends of your hair after washing it normally. Leave it there for a couple of minutes, just as you would a conditioner, then rinse it out with clean water. This can help prevent frizz, and is far cheaper than using commercial chemical anti frizz serums! It also, of course, gives your hair a beautiful sweet smell that will last for hours!
Soften Up Your Elbows
Elbow skin is very prone to getting dry and flaky. You may not really notice this most of the time, but if you give your outer elbows a feel chances are the skin there could use some attention. Dry elbows (and to a lesser extent, knees) can be especially problematic if you use fake tan – the tanning product clings to the dead skin and you end up with horrible patchy orange bits. Luckily, honey is a very easy solution to this. Just put some honey on your elbows (and knees if they’re dry too – in fact, why not put some on your ankles as well – anywhere rough and dry!), leave it for 30 minutes, then wash it away. As a natural exfoliate and softener, it will leave skin much softer and get rid of the flakes. Do this any time you like, but make it a part of your pre fake tan moisturizing routine for a much nicer result on these problem areas.
Make Your Own Honey Facial Scrub
While honey by itself is great for skin, if you want something for your face that feels like a professional product, but which you can make at home for very little cost, a honey facial scrub gives you the skin enhancing benefits of honey and more. Simply mix in some ground almonds and a dash of lemon juice, and use it like a normal facial scrub to slough away dead skin and blackheads, tone and nourish your skin all in one step.
These are just some of the great ways you can use honey in your beauty routine, so why not take that jar from the kitchen to the bathroom today!
