Acne is a common skin condition. It typically affects teenagers, but nobody is immune and plenty of adults in their 40s or even older suffer from acne. Many people grow out of their acne by the time they reach their mid-twenties. After several years of living with unsightly pustules and red, inflamed boils, their skin slowly begins to heal and although they are left with some residual scarring, their complexion is largely clear.
The problem is that if you have acne it can ruin your self-confidence. It is hard not to think everyone is staring at your zits when you walk out the door. Older people are usually sympathetic, but as a teenager, you can expect to endure all kinds or torment if you are afflicted with bad acne. So is wheatgrass a magical cure – or are wheatgrass juice shots bought online or from health food stores just a gimmick?
What Causes Acne?
Acne is caused by an overproduction of sebum, an oily substance. The soil blocks hair follicles and mixes with dead skin cells to form a plug. Bacteria build up and infect the blocked pores, which causes spots and cysts. Teenage acne is typically caused by fluctuating hormone levels. Testosterone in particular stimulates the sebaceous glands to produce too much oil. Acne is also thought to be hereditary and if your parents had it, you are more likely to suffer from it too.
Depending on the severity of the acne, there are many treatments available. Topical treatments often work well for mild acne, but if you have a large number of pustules on your body as well as your face, other, stronger treatments will be recommended. The downside to such treatments is that they usually have side effects.
For many people, conventional acne treatments have little effect. If this is you, it is worth adopting a different approach. Wheatgrass is a completely natural substance, which has been shown to have a positive effect on acne.
Wheatgrass and Acne
Wheatgrass contains high levels of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, all of which nourish the skin from the inside out. Drinking a shot of wheatgrass juice daily will cleanse your body inside and out. It helps to remove toxins, which in turns helps to clear the skin. Wheatgrass also has powerful antibacterial qualities, so you can apply pure wheatgrass juice to your skin and it will kill skin bacteria and sooth inflammation.
If taken long-term, wheatgrass has been shown to heal acne scarring. Since the only other way to reduce acne scarring is to pay for expensive laser skin therapies, it is definitely worth giving daily shots of wheatgrass juice a go if your skin is scarred from repeated acne breakouts.
Pure wheatgrass is not terribly pleasant, so try taking your daily dose in the form of a shot of juice. You can also mix wheatgrass juice or powder with orange juice, or add it to a smoothie to make it more palatable if required.
