Ford has just unveiled its first electric dragster prototype. It is the Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 electric, a racing vehicle whose engine is capable of delivering “more than 1,400 horsepower,” according to the manufacturer. Dragsters, as motor enthusiasts will know, are specialized drag racing vehicles in which cars must run (usually) a quarter mile in a straight line in the shortest possible time.
According to Ford, this Cobra Jet 1400 is capable of running the quarter mile in less than eight seconds at a speed of over 170 mph, (273 kilometers per hour). The current record in electric drag racing is held by Larry McBride and Shawn Lawless of Virginia Motorsports, who completed the quarter mile in 6.9 seconds.
Beyond the details regarding the engine’s peak power and top speed, Ford has not given any further details of the vehicle. In short, this prototype is nothing more than a test of strength to, according to Ford, “demonstrate the capabilities of an electric powertrain in one of the most demanding racing environments”.
