Sega announces Game Gear Micro, the mini version of its legendary handheld console

Sega had planned a big ad “on a par with PS5” for its 60th anniversary, or so a Famitsu magazine enthusiast journalist said. Today, a new mini console was unveiled, and it’s the classic Game Gear handheld that fits in the palm of your hand and is reminiscent of Game Boy Micro.

This 8-bit console was released in 1990 as a direct competitor to Nintendo’s Game Boy, but it didn’t achieve the same success. Game Gear Micro will arrive in Japan on 6 October, and it’s not yet known whether it will be released outside of the land of the rising sun.

It will come in one of four colors (yellow, red, blue and black), and will cost 4,980 yen, or about 41 euros. Each of the colors will come with a series of games. There will also be a pack available for sale that includes the four versions of the console and the Big Window Micro accessory (a magnifying glass) that enlarges the screen.

  • Black: Out Run, Puyo Puyo Tsu, Royal Stone and Sonic the Hedgehog
  • Blue: Baku Baku Animal: Sekai Shiikugakari Senshuken, Gunstar Heroes, Sonic & Tails, Sylvan Tale
  • Yellow: Nazo Puyo: Arle no Roux, Shining Force, Shining Force II, Shining Force: Final Conflict
  • Red: Columns, The G.G. Shinobi, Megami Tensei Gaiden: Last Bible, Megami Tensei Gaiden: Last Bible Special
