Hospitals collapsed, health workers exhausted, authorities overwhelmed? Romania is suffering its worst moment since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Tuesday saw a new record number of deaths and daily infections: 564 people died and there were almost 18,900 new infections.
In some medical centers, ambulances are being used as waiting rooms and several patients have died after waiting several days without being seen.
– “We are facing a disastrous situation, similar to a siege. We have not seen anything like it in previous waves of the pandemic. In the last 24 hours, 18 people have died here in Galati, and they were all unvaccinated,” says Mihai Polinschi, spokesman for the Galati Ambulance Department.
– “We are facing an avalanche of cases, patients in serious health condition, all of them needing oxygen supplies. We have 70 patients in all the isolation wards of the Emergency Department,” explains Dr. Violeta Sapira, spokesperson of Galati Hospital.
The slowness of the vaccination campaign is largely responsible for the situation, according to experts. The country’s president has asked the government to speed it up and, in the meantime, to re-impose restrictive measures.
